The Mediterranean Garden
Mediterranean gardens are warm, sheltered and intimate spaces for relaxing and entertaining. Flowers and herbs are complimented by a variety of containers. Earthenware pots, iron hanging baskets, iron window baskets and metal urns are commonly filled with geraniums, bougainvillaea and begonias.
Iron is a favorite design material for outdoor lighting, candle holders, gates, fountains and iron wall decor.
If you live in a humid climate, a yearly application of lacquer or polyurethane will keep your iron and metal decorating accessories looking like new.

MEDITERRANEAN PATIO AND TERRACE GARDENS
A patio garden is ideal for growing cooking herbs and flowering plants that offer seasonal color. In the terrace garden above we decorated one wall with our Barcelona Round Wall Grille. A vertical Ventana Grille graces the side of the arched doorway.
To the right, earthenware planters add a touch of color to this patio garden. We placed an Olivia Iron Topper above the fountain niche to add architectural interest and to give balance to the iron light fixtures.
CLASSIC MEDITERRANEAN HARDSCAPES
A Mediterranean hardscape contains earth tone shades of terra cotta and gold. Walls are stone or stucco and floors are natural stone pavers or sandstone.
Occasional splashes of bright color are used in the hardscape. Bright blue, orange or gold ceramic pots, brightly colored urns and colorful tiles around a fireplace surround or water feature are decorating accents often found in Mediterranean gardens.
High walled courtyards are common and the entrance is often a grand portico enhanced with stone columns, balustrades and ornate iron work. Walls can be found painted matte white, muted terra cotta orange and even Mediterranean sea blue.

THE MEDITERRANEAN PERGOLA
A Mediterranean pergola is traditionally a covered walkway but the term also refers to a heavy open-beamed structure used for dining and entertaining.
(LEFT) The iron fence panels between each pergola column enclose a section of the natural stone terrace to create an outdoor room. Large oversized planters, iron decorating accessories and the natural stone hardscape enhance the Mediterranean look.
The space defined by a Mediterranean style pergola is an ideal setting for family downtime and is a perfect entertaining expansion when hosting guests and extended family gatherings.
