THE OLD WORLD KITCHEN

Old World encompasses many design themes, including French Country, Tuscan, Mediterranean, Spanish, French Chateau and Italian Villa.

Kitchen cabinets in the old world style kitchen take many forms and designs. Ancient kitchens were fitted with wood tables for food preparation, large hutches for dishes, shelves for condiments, oils and vinegars and iron racks for hanging cooking wares, dried spices and vegetables from the garden.

KITCHEN CABINETS

WOODS AND CUSTOM FINISHES
In today's old world kitchen rich warm woods like cherry and alder are fashionable and combine beautifully with scrolled iron, decorative carved corbels and multiple edges of moulding.

Pine is traditional in old world kitchens and often seen in painted hutches and islands. Instead of matching cabinets throughout, different materials, colors and finishes are used to give the old world kitchen a visually interesting look. Distressed finishes, worn with time, make the old word style kitchen a favorite with young families who quickly put a worn touch on a new kitchen.

KITCHEN CABINET HARDWARE
Cabinet hardware is rustic and bold. Hinges and latches are exposed and often ornate.

KITCHEN CABINET DOORS
Cabinet doors are simple and many times with a raised panel eyebrow arch design. Ancient kitchens seldom used closed door cabinetry. Dishes and serve ware was stored on open shelves and became part of the kitchen decorating theme. Homeowners opting for a similar look often choose cabinet doors with glass. Even stained glass and beveled glass panels work in the old world kitchen.

KITCHEN ISLANDS
The kitchen island dates back to the wood farm table that served as a food preparation area.

Today's kitchen islands can be small or large and can be stationary or a piece of furniture that can be moved. Kitchen islands often include seating for friends and family.

When designing a kitchen island, collect pictures of kitchen islands and choose favorite features to incorporate into the perfect island for your old world kitchen.

Rustic Distressed Finishes KITCHEN FURNITURE
Free standing furniture is the hallmark of the old world kitchen.

Large hutches store dishes and decorative accessories.

A large armoire is ideal as a kitchen pantry.

Bookshelves and tables are furniture pieces that can be incorporated into the old world kitchen design.
