Etruscan Design Pottery for Tuscan Decorating
Etruscan Origins and Influence

The first instance in which pottery attached itself to a recognized school of art occurred in Italy where the creation of objects for everyday use became a vehicle of artistic expression.

Italian art history begins with the Etruscans. Etruscan civilization was created in the now known Tuscany region of Italy. It isn't known where these peoples came from, but characteristics of their art suggest that the original Etruscans were from a region in Asia Minor. Historians place their origins in Asia Minor because they brought a high level of a Greek-like culture with them to northern Italy.

The Etruscans were an agrarian people, but they also used military tactics to establish governance over the northern regions of the Italian peninsula. The Etruscans were at the height of their power in 500 B.C.

Rustic Imported Italian Pottery

The Etruscans at first imported and copied decorative Greek pottery. They were particularly noted for elaborate painted vessels with incised or relief decoration suggesting metalwork.

Etruscans were experts with the potter's wheel and they used their expertise to create decorative ceramics for daily and religious purposes.

Etruscan pottery themes commonly depict banquets, festivals, warriors and scenes of daily life. Subjects from religion often depict figures dancing or playing musical instruments. Human and animal figures are stylized, heavy, and often outlined in black. Animals frequently embellish the decoration and lend natural harmony to the finished work.
Etruscan Style Pottery
Decorating with Classic Shape and Form

Since humans first walked the earth thousands of years ago, there has been a need to transport, store and protect food and water. Through archaeology, pottery remnants are unearthed that help shape man's understanding of human development. It is no surprise that storage and carrying vessels are among these ancient relics and that they are often cited as examples of human advancement, evolution and sophistication. Italian ceramics are favorite decorating accessories when creating an Italian Mediterranean style that looks to the past for inspiration.

Italian Glazing Techniques
The oldest known body of pottery dates from about 10,500 to 400 B.C. in Japan. Chinese potters had developed characteristic techniques by about 5000 B.C. Potters were working in Iran in 5500 B.C., and earthenware pottery vessels were probably being produced even earlier on the Iranian high plateau. Italian ceramic glazing techniques trace their roots back to the Mesopotamia region of Iran.
Over centuries pottery glazing techniques developed in the Iranian region of Mesopotamia, spread across north Africa and were introduced to Europe with the Moorish invasion of Spain in 710 A.D. Morocco controlled Spain until the late 1400's. During the more than 700 year Moorish occupation, pottery painting and glazing techniques were improved and advanced by the Spanish. By the early 1500's Spanish traders began spreading this technology to Italy and other western European countries.

White Works Year Round

Major accessory investments hold their place in a decorating theme when seasonal color changes are made to a room's design. Shades of white do not clash as do many shades of red or yellow when the change from fall and holiday decorating is made to a seasonal spring and summer look. White accessories can evoke thoughts of snow-capped mountains in winter months or sun bleached sand on a Carribean beach during the spring and summer decorating season. Shades of white work effortlessly in a well designed interior.

White accessories get full attention in colorful Tuscan theme rooms. White reflects light and the eye is drawn to light. White enhances the room's appeal by by allowing the eye to distinguish and appreciate other accessories in more vivid or muted colors. White accessories are neutral. Neutrality and flexibility allows the homeowner to make major investments in decorative objects of art in the time-tested color of white.
